MOTHER OF THE BRIDE / GROOM
  by House of Superior Clothing

The run-up to your son or daughter’s wedding is a very exciting time and, as
the big day approaches, you will start looking forward to dressing up and
  feeling gorgeous.

Naturally, mothers can never simply relax and enjoy being part of the
merriment. You will probably have to dash about, mingling with guests and
perhaps even taking a turn or two about the dance floor. For this reason, it is
essential that comfort be at the top of your priority list when you select your
outfit for the big day. You need to be sure that you end the day looking just
as fresh as you did when you began it.

There are basically three options available to the mother of the bride or
groom when it comes to an outfit for the wedding day. (Remember – your
only limitations are those set by your own imagination – and, of course, the
preference of your son or daughter!)

  Elegant dresses
Elegant dresses are usually made of silk, satin or chiffon and often include
beaded or embroidered detail. These dresses can be any length – from
ankle-length to just above the knee. An accessory such as a stole, scarf or
cloak can also be a nice touch. The design and colour of the outfit must be
carefully selected to be appropriate, depending on whether it is to be a
morning or an evening wedding. A floor-length dress, for example, is best-
  suited to an evening wedding.

  Designer suits
Designer suits can be comprised of skirts (of various lengths) or trousers and
tailored jackets of different styles and lengths. Unlike traditional designer
suits, those created for weddings are usually of soft silk, chiffon or georgette,
with lace insertions. A lace jacket (long or short), paired with a matching two-
piece in a single colour (skirt or pants and a top), is always striking. Although
a top with a matching skirt is always a good choice for the mother of the
bride, not everyone feels good in a skirt or a dress and skirts and dresses do
not suit all figures. A good alternative is a romantically-styled, elegant,
modern trouser suit of soft fabric.

Ensure that your outfit expresses your own personal style and try not to
deviate too much from the wedding’s theme.

Allow yourself enough time to search for the most suitable outfit. Visit
boutiques with a good reputation and choose an outfit that not only meets
with the approval of your son or daughter, but also makes you feel good.

  Shoes
The most important thing is that your shoes are comfortable – you will be
wearing them for several hours. However, comfort means different things to
different people. Think of the pair of shoes that you already own that you
find the most comfortable. Why are they so comfortable? Is it the material
they are made of, the fit, the style, or the height of the heel? Consider all of
these factors when choosing the pair that you will wear on the big day.

  One final bit of advice…
Do not try to take over – this is not time to be the centre of attention or to try
to show-up the ‘other’ mother. Many women see a summer wedding as the
ideal opportunity to wear an ivory-coloured trouser suit. This is inappropriate
  – never wear white or cream without the express permission of the bride. She
should be the only person in white, ivory or cream!

Cooperate with your son or daughter’s future mother-in-law to ensure that you
complement the wedding’s theme perfectly. Your children have enough to
worry about without having to deal with the extra pressure of worrying about
their mothers’ outfits! Open up the channels of communication early: this is
the ideal opportunity to start your relationship with your in-laws off on a good
  footing.

Discuss possible colour options based on the wedding’s theme and be honest
about what suits you – now is not the time to wear something that makes you
look (and feel) hideous. Bear in mind the colours of the flowers, jewellery,
flower girls’ outfits, and the men’s suits and ties and then choose a colour for
yourself that will complement and blend in with the shades they will wear. If
your own parents will be attending, take the initiative and ensure that their
outfits are also appropriate. Remember – this day is all about your son or
daughter and you must do everything in your power to minimise their stress
whilst helping them to realise their dream wedding day.

Last, but most important: enjoy this special occasion with your loved ones to
  the full!
