BRIDAL HAIR & MAKEUP
  by Marie Malherbe

Apart from your wedding dress and the wedding photographs, your hair &
make-up is probably one of the most important parts of the bride’s wedding
day. Your hair & make-up should compliment you and your wedding dress,
and if your hair & make-up is not done professionally, it can easily reflect on
  your wedding photographs.

  Bridal Make-up
I strongly recommend that you make use of a professional make-up artist on
the day of your wedding. Yes, you might argue that every woman is capable
of applying make-up, but few are actually professionally trained. Experienced
and highly skilled make-up artists have the ability to apply make-up in such a
way that it will suit each individual’s features and ultimately enhances her
natural beauty. Make-up artists also use professional products and tools which
are designed to give you the best finish on your skin, creating anything from a
natural look to a more glamorous look, depending on your personality and
what you want. Professional products also photograph exceptionally well.

Just as wedding venues and photographers should be booked well in advance,
so does hair & make-up artists also have to be booked up to 8 months to a year
in advance, depending on the month in which you are planning to get
married (high season from September – April). Take the time to look at a few
make-up artists’ portfolios and once you’ve decided and feel comfortable with
your choice, a deposit is normally required to confirm your booking.

  Important information for the bride:
Book your trial 1 week to 1 month prior to your wedding day so that the look is
still fresh in your memory. Trials are usually done at the make-up artist’s
studio. On the day of your wedding, however, the make-up artist travels to your
venue where you are getting dressed.

Don’t wear any make-up to the artist on the day of the trial and on your
wedding day. You should also take extra care of your skin for two to three
months prior to your wedding day. Also drink a lot of water. The better your
skin looks, the better the make-up will look. Your make-up artist will be forever
  grateful!

Pictures of a specific look you like are always welcome. It is important to tell
the artist exactly what you want, but also let your make-up artist make
recommendations if necessary. You don’t want to look completely different on
your wedding day and still want your husband to recognise you when you walk
  down that isle.

Be completely honest about the outcome of your trial. If there is something
that you’re not happy with ask your artist to change it.

You should preferably not wear brightly coloured eye shadow, like blue, green
and pink on your wedding day, as these colours are considered to be a bit
outdated at present. Make sure your look is striking, yet classic, because in 20
years’ time you don’t want to feel embarrassed showing your wedding pictures.

  Bridal Hair
Your hairstyle also plays an important role on your wedding day, because it
compliments the make-up and is the crown to the final look. It is important to
look yourself, but still be classic and modern.

Hairstylist, Lize McElhone, from Marié Malherbe Hair & Make-up, gives the
following important tips for the bride:

Book your trial 1 to 2 weeks prior to your wedding day. Don’t do the trial

months before your wedding day, as you should keep in mind that your hair
will grow and your ideas might change.

Go prepared – make sure your hair is clean and without any gel or other hair
products. The same goes for your wedding day.

Take along pictures of hairstyles and hair jewellery that you like.
Also bear in mind that any colour or highlights play a vital role in any up-style
It is recommended that all colour treatments be done one week before your
big day. Even if you don’t usually colour your hair, remember that this is your
special day and its one day in your life and forever in your wedding album.

If need be, cut your budget elsewhere, but not on your hair & make-up. You
are worth being spoiled. Enjoy being the bride on that wonderful day!
